Day 4 - Victorville

Finally some trains! :)
We woke up went to breakfast at Jinky's Cafe; took a long walk along the beach before loading up and heading out.

At 11:10 we started at the western terminus of Highway 66 at the corner of Olympic and Lincoln in Santa Monica. We then headed down Santa Monica Blvd., Colorado Blvd, Arroyo Seco Parkway (I think the oldest freeway in LA), and Foothill Blvd through West LA, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Hollywood, Pasadena, Monrovia, Rancho Cucamonga, Azusa, Upland, and San Bernadino. Then north on Mt Vernon and Cajon Blvd over Cajon Summit and into Victorville.

The temperature hovered around 100, hitting 103 at one point in Upland.

We stopped along the way just before Cajon Blvd joins "The 15" at Cleghorn Rd. Soooo hot and bright with the sun in the wrong place. It was tough getting train pictures; I still don't have my camera skills down. Taking pictures in this bright bright light is different than Portland where we usually have to worry about the overcast. But here are a couple showing the upper and lower tracks as the Union Pacific and BNSF come together.

My favorite picture of the day is a Union Pacific rolling by and the conductor taking a picture of me.

We pulled into the hotel in Victorville at 5:10 PM - 6 hours of driving with about 1 hour total stops for lunch and trains. Wow; it was a very tiring day. After a quick dip in the pool we headed into downtown Victorville to eat at Emma Jean's Holland Burger. Driving through town we saw the New Corral Motel and stopped to take a picture of the neon sign.

We got to Holland Burger but it was closed! It is open from 5:00 AM to 2:45 PM. Maybe we'll hit it for breakfast on the way out of town tomorrow.

  1. FINALLY!! some train pictures... I was almost thinking you might have lied about trains and Route 66 :-) Please, dont bring back the 100-103 degree weather. Today is suppose to be in the 90's and thats hot enough for the kid. Sorry to hear the Burger was a flop. Looked like they may have served a good messy burger too. Misha and I are handling the on slaught of user requests and should have all changes into production before you get back :-) Keep up the blog it looks like you and the wife are having a great time. I also liked the picture of the engine looking back at you. You two stay cool.
